“But Seimei died. He died in a horrifying way.” Yun Kouga, Loveless Volume 1
When Kouga’s manga first starts, there are two things we know for sure. One is Ritsuka’s older brother, Seimei, died in an extremely unpleasant manner. The second is an unmistakable stigma has followed him around since the death. Everyone is careful, and overly nice, without actually being helpful. He’s also not the same person he was, only able to remember the last two years of his life. And on top of everything else, he has to deal with a mentally ill mother who has violent tendencies. In short, Ritsuka has essentially been alone since he lost Seimei.
After a hard first day at school, Ritsuka tries to run from the only possible person who could be deemed a friend, and slams directly into Soubi. A stranger, and a grown-up (In the story, when you lose your virginity, you lose the cat ears on your head. Kind of hard to hide.) Soubi, a mysteriously gorgeous man, immediately puts Ritsuka at easy by introducing himself as Seimei’s friend/weapon.
The two are thrown into a Battle by Wordspell moments after meeting, and a bouquet of questions begins to bloom in Ritsuka’s head. What was Soubi to Seimei? What the hell is this battle going on? Why does school suck so hard?
Little does Ritsuka know that he is about to enter a dangerous world his beloved brother kept secret from him… The real question is, is he ready to uncover it?
